Network TAP (test access point, also named traffic analysis point) is an external monitoring device that mirrors the traffic which is passing between network nodes. The network TAPs acquire data and forward it to the visibility and analytics fabric (physical nodes) or virtual nodes for aggregation, filtering and application of traffic intelligence before distributing the data to the network and security tools.
Passive fiber network TAPs are based on optical coupler (splitter). They create perfect copies of all traffic at full bandwidth without introducing a point of failure and provide the secure access of network data in optical networks. They require no power or management and do not actively interact with other components of the network.
